The Berks County Dog Training Club is proud to offer a program designed for dogs who have not gotten off to a good start. What is the Dog with Special Needs Class? The class grew out of the club having dogs drop out of the Basic Skills Class, because they could not learn or even function properly in a group of dogs. Some of these dogs barked continuously, some of them lunged sporadically at other dogs, and some would cower behind their owner and could not move. This class is designed to desensitize these special dogs to class situations and other dogs. At the same time teaching their owners how to handle these dogs with special needs, as well as provide some skills that will help immediately. The curriculum for this class addresses:
Owner/dog relationship; dog to dog desensitization; attention exercises where dogs focus on their owners command; some basic and useful commands are taught like "sit stay", "down stay", “leave it” and how to walk on a leash as well as “sit”.
Other issues that will be addressed: housebreaking, chewing, mouthing, jumping up, food bowl aggression, place and toy guarding plus more. This is not a class for dogs who have a history of causing dogs or people to seek medical help for a bite. One of the best things you can do for your dog is to train him or her as soon as possible. It is never too late to start. Learning how to be the leader your dog needs is the first, important step. COST: $150.00for Non-Members (this includes 6 weeks of the Dogs with Special Needs class, 8 weeks of club’s Basic Skills Class, plus a club membership to complete your dog’s training). $35.00 for Club Members ( **Dogs With Special Needs class only**) Summer orientation is held at Liberty Fire Company, Ralph and Ruth Sts, Sinking Spring. Please bring proof of vaccination to orientation. Orientation will be WITHOUT YOUR DOG.
